brake pipes and the worlds most stupidly placed bolt
Hi All
Can anyone give me some advice. When changing my brake hoses i noticed that my pipes were pretty bad and i am setting out to replace them. I have a 91 neon and am replacing the pipe going from the near to the offside.
However, i have no idea how to get to the bolt that i need to undo. I was goung to cheat and take my car to a garage, but my car is off the road and i am sruggling to tow it (as i have no brakes!)
Anyone know the best way of replacing this brake pipe?
Cheers

Do you mean the pipe that goes around the front of the front subframe?

Yup!

The answer I'm afraid is they are extremely difficult to get at, and you can only do it properly with the engine out - especially the nearside one under the radiator.
Basically, if it's not rusted through I'd leave it alone.
If it has rusted through, and the rusted bit is accessible, I would just cut out that section of pipe and make a short bridge piece.

Well, I think it looks brilliantbut then i suppose id say that because its my car. The place where I had it sprayed did a fantastic job, spent some proper hours on it. They've done a brill Job! Cant wait to get it on the road now, I struggle abit though because to be honest I dont really know what I'm doing, my dad took it all apart then passed away so up to me to finish it!!!

Minispares list them as part HF10, Somerford Mini list them as GPP10AA.
What did you get?

Brake Pipe lay out
I have a type 4 tandem brake servo with discs on front, drums on the rear. Last weekend a friend and I set about laying the brake pipes down. We brought it from the take offs from the servo into a T piece mounted on the off-side wing. From here, we then ran one feed straight down into the brake hose on the offside of the subframe. Next we ran the nearside by bringing it straight down onto the subframe, along the front rail of the subframe (near the grille) then bent it to face the nearside brake hose.
Iv been to the Mini show at Stafford county showground yesterday and I have looked at cars at a similar age (86) and have noticed that the brake pipe layout is slightly different.
Does anybody have any pictures of their engine bay when they had laid down their brake pipes so I can see where (if i have) gone wrong?
Or a brake pipe layout that shows where the pipes run in the engine bay.
I have a haynes manual, but it only gives a basic idea of how the pipes are laid out from front to rear. It may sound a dumb question, but i didnt take the car apart!
Thanks :)

Ok, Thanks I will have a look. I have a rough idea, and after phoning Minispares yesterday I confirmed my suspicions that I had bought the wrong part, so its just the layout to have a look for.

Hi, replaced all front brake pipes, put engine back in, but when we turn ignition key the brake pipe between pressure valve thingy and brass union on drivers side gets very hot very quickly. Can't see anything obvious earthing to chassis. Any ideas anybody???

Check the main live feed to the from the battery to the starter motor (it runs under the front subby on the drivers side) people have been known to jack up under here and trap the wire to the sub frame,it's not always obvious it's damaged. Hope this helps

It's more likely to be a frayed or broken earth strap - the current is going to earth via the only way it can, via the brake pipes, and causing them to heat up. They could easily melt and/or something else could cath fire if you don't fix this urgently.

Brake pipe connections
Okay mini lovers, help needed. Coming to the end of complete restoration of the good 'ladies' mini. Usual procedure, take dozens and dozens of photos as dismantling takes place etc. etc. However, as is usual in these matters sods law rears its ugly head, it would appear that I missed/lost the photo of brake pipe connections to the brake limiter valve (PDWA).
In view of a marked lack of information in the manual, am I right in thinking that the connections are as follows: viewing from the front of the vehicle - bottom left connection goes to the front brakes; bottom right goes to the rear brakes? Top left goes to rear connection on master cylinder and top right goes to front connection of master cylinder.
The car is a 1990 Rover mini 1000, Flame red, the master cylinder is the GMC90376 fitted on servo, and the PDWA is FAM7281.
Many thanks in anticipation.

Have you looked on Somerford Mini's website? Their diagrams are pretty clear:

Found it. Also found Mini Spares diagram which is identical except it actually shows the GMC90376 m/cyl. It would appear that my assumption of connections is right.
Many thanks for your attention.
